IESF 28th general meeting

On the occasion of its general meeting held in Paris on June 28th, 2017, IESF * (Société des Ingénieurs et Scientifiques de France) elected its new President, Mr. Marc Ventre (Chairman of the Board of Directors of ArianeGroup) taking over Mr. François Lureau.

IESF representatives also presented the association 28th national report on engineers and scientists.

Report highlights:

• 56 000 engineers (France global engineers population is slightly above 1 million) answered the questionnaire sent out by IESF
• Median gross annual salary of engineers: € 56,000 (women: € 47,100, men: € 59,600), to be compared to € 48,000 for executives (“cadres”) and € 29,000 for all employees
• End of career median gross salaries: € 83,000 (women) and € 100,000 (men)
• Women account for 20% of engineers population and 28.5% of the 2016 promotions (vs. 15.4% in 1986 and 4% in 1956)
• Engineers enjoy a low unemployment rate: 3.9% (1% long-term) vs. 10% for general population
• 49% of engineers work in the France’s provinces, 35% in the Paris region and 16% out of France
• 77% of engineers claim they are satisfied or very satisfied with their job (satisfied / dissatisfied: 21%)
• 54% of engineers work in large (more than 5 000 people) companies / groups and 23% work in SMEs and VSEs)
• Sectors of activity: industry (302,000 engineers), non-service companies (236,000), service companies and software publishers (125,000)
• 79% of engineers work in the private sector and have the following positions: studies / research / design (32.1%), production (20%), IT positions (12.8%), sales & marketing (8.3%), executive (8.1%) and technical advice (5%)
• 113,000 engineer recruitments took place in 2016 (including 5,000 for the aeronautics / space sector)
• More than 50% of engineers report working more than 45 hours per week
• 44% of engineers followed training courses (technical, management, project management, efficiency, quality, etc.) in 2016
• 43% of engineers consider that digital transformation (big data, mobility, artificial intelligence, connected objects, etc.) is a major revolution that will bring deep changes in society, generating positive effects (innovation, creativity, geographical mobility, individual well-being, economic growth, etc.) and also some risks (data security, privacy, job retention, loss of responsibility, etc.)
• 52,000 engineers under the age of 65 (including 7,250 women) are entrepreneurs (as a main professional occupation) with a € 50,000 median yearly gross salary
