EUROCONTROL Aviation StraightTalk #29

A live & exclusive interview with Michael O'Leary, Ryanair Group CEO

(This webinar will be held in english)

Is European aviation on track to build back better after COVID-19?

Join at the next EUROCONTROL Aviation StraightTalk Live on 23 November, 15:00-15:45 CET with the leader who pioneered the European low-cost carrier revolution, Michael O'Leary, Ryanair Group CEO.

It's been an eventful year for European aviation since StraightTalk last touched base with Michael late in 2020, deep in the second wave of COVID with significant traffic restrictions, and vaccines still in clinical trials. This summer, thanks to huge vaccination drives and the success of the EU Digital COVID Certificate, network traffic finally bounced back to reach almost 80% of pre-pandemic levels – a recovery spearheaded by Ryanair's impressively rapid ramping-up of capacity. Ryanair spent the summer far out in front of the pack with around 2,200 average daily flights, almost double that of the next busiest airline – and setting a two-year record of 2,529 flights on 10 September.

Right now Ryanair continues to ride high. Daily flights at Europe's busiest airline have recovered so well that Ryanair is currently flying at over 100%, and while many other airlines have reacted to the pandemic by cutting fleet capacity, Ryanair has boldly embarked on a massive fleet renewal and expansion programme. Since the summer, 15 brand-new "Gamechanger" 737-8200s of a 210-strong order have entered into service, a huge investment in new technology designed to cut costs, fuel consumption, noise and CO2emissions as part of the airline's commitment to sustainability.

In this exclusive interview, we're looking forward to hearing whether Michael thinks European aviation is on track to build back better after COVID-19. Restrictions may have eased across Europe, enabling airlines to restore capacity this summer to meet the considerable pent-up demand, but there's still a long way to go for the sector, particularly for travel further afield, and with massive losses across all parts of the industry that will take years to recover from.

And the challenge of aviation sustainability has become a pressing one, as the COP26 climate change summit has underlined. We'll be asking Michael whether he thinks the industry is really ready, as it recovers from the worst financial crisis in its history, to commit to tough targets to reduce emissions – and how best to meet such targets.

The interview will be conducted by Andrew Charlton, journalist and Aviation Advocacy Managing Director.
